HITEC Fellows 2018/2019: CLOSED
HITEC, the international graduate school in Energy and Climate Research is currently recruiting postgraduate students for the challenging fields of energy and climate research. Its faculty members, scientists and engineers, are leading experts in their fields. HITEC is a joint initiative between Forschungszentrum Jülich, the RWTH Aachen University, the Ruhr-University Bochum, the University of Cologne, the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, and the University of Wuppertal. HITEC is committed to scientific excellence, to an interdisciplinary and international research environment, to an accepting learning environment which embraces diversity, and aims to turn the Ph.D. students into well needed experts for academia and industry.
HITEC offers a 3-year training programme which accompanies the doctoral thesis: students can select from a variety of HITEC events, including lectures on topics or methods, hands-on training courses in the lab or professional skills training, such as scientific writing or presenting.
In the last quarter of each year a call for applications for doctoral positions is launched. Up to six so called HITEC Fellows will be selected each year. They work at the Institute of Energy and Climate Research, Forschungszentrum Jülich. They participate in the HITEC Programme and become part of a wider community.
We are seeking highly qualified and motivated scientists and engineers for doctoral studies in energy and climate research, specifically in materials science, energy conversion, photovoltaics, plasma physics, nuclear waste management, modeling, numerical simulations, electronics, electrical and mechanical engineering, and atmospheric physics or chemistry. 14 projects and 5 research fields are open for application; 6 positions as HITEC Fellows are available.
HITEC welcomes applications from any qualified applicants, regardless of gender, ethnicity or country of origin. However, candidates will only be considered if eligibility requirements are met and the application rules are strictly adhered to.
Applicants should hold a M.Sc. (Master’s) or equivalent degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Sciences, Meteorology, Mathematics, Engineering or related sciences, including a written masters research thesis. Specific requirements are indicated for each project.
It is not mandatory that you have completed your degree by the time you submit your application. However, the expected date of your final exam should not be later than June/July 2019.
The integration in national and international co-operations requires the willingness to cooperate in teams. We expect that you are able to communicate your results in oral and written form in very good English.
Projects and Research Fields
14 Ph.D. projects and 5 research fields are open for application.
You will find six projects from the field of energy research, and eight projects from the field of climate research. The project ideas and working packages are outlined in the project descriptions. For each project the specific requirements are indicated.
If you don't find a project that matches exactly your educational background but you are generally interested in the field of e.g. nuclear waste management, fusion, photovoltaics, analytics, or electronic systemsyou can refer to the corresponding research field. A specific Ph.D. project will be discussed with you if you have been successful in the first selection step.
You are eligible to apply for more than 1 project/research field. However, for each project/research field you have to file a complete application.

Follow application procedure as indicated and complete your application online. Use the specific links on the pages of the projects and research fields.
After closing of the call the applications will be reviewed. Only complete applications will be considered. The best candidates will be invited to Germany for a week - from 05 - 15 March 2019 - to join the respective research group at Forschungszentrum Jülich. You will receive an email notification about the invitation in December 2018. All costs will be covered by HITEC. The task during this one week is to jointly work on the project idea with the group members and your supervisor to turn it into an outstanding and convincing Ph.D. project. On the last day of their stay the candidates will present their projects to the members of the HITEC Advisory Board. The six best candidates will be nominated for a HITEC fellowship.
