Welcome to HITEC - the Graduate School in Energy and Climate Research

HITEC is a graduate school for doctoral candidates at the Forschungszentrum Jülich and its partner universities RWTH Aachen University, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Universität zu Köln, Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, and Bergische Universität Wuppertal.

Its main objective is to foster interdisciplinary communication among PhD students working in the fields of energy and climate research and to enhance the PhD experience by providing additional scientific and professional qualifications and international exchanges that supplement the candidates’ research work. HITEC is funded by the Helmholtz Initiative and Networking Fund.

Measurements of the temperature in the upper earth atmosphere:

Jülich doctoral researchers together with students and doctoral researchers from Bergische Universität Wuppertal as well as from Max-Planck-Institut für die Physik des Lichts have tested successfully a mini satellite to measure the temperature in the upper atmosphere.

New materials for cheap solar energy

Jülich scientists together with an international research team have developed new organic solar cells with higher energy efficiency. Compared to other conventually used (organic) materials these new solar cells exploit specific molecules that show some distinct advantages: The light is better absorbed, the molecules are more stable and cheaper. The results have been published in 'Nature Materials' and 'Energy and Environmenal Science'.

Nocturnal Detergents with Side Effects

Nitrate radicals in the air clean the atmosphere at night. Jülich atmospheric researchers together with colleagues from twenty international research institutions have now found out that this probably has unforeseen side effects.

From Leaf to Tree: Large-Scale Artificial Photosynthesis

Scientists from FZJ have developed the first complete and compact design for an artificial photosynthesis facility. This is a decisive step towards applying the technology. The concept is flexible both with respect to the materials used and also the size of the system. More in German.

New materials from Jülich forward the ‘Energiewende’

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding two projects of the Jülich Institute of Energy and Climate Research, Materials Synthesis and Processing (IEK-1) dealing with materials for the ‘Energiewende’ with approximately 2.6 million euros. Parliamentary State Secretary Thomas Rachel handed over the funding decisions at Forschungszentrum Jülich. More in German.

The IAGOS fleet keeps on growing

A new Airbus A330 of China Airlines is now part of the international climate research project IAGOS. The passenger aircraft is equipped with 120kg package of measuring instruments. The instruments collect climate relevant tracer gas and cloud particles at cruising altitude which are important for climate research and numerical weather forecast.

Silicon-air battery: now it runs

For the first time Silicon-air battery time exceeded 1000 hours run-time. Silicon-air batteries are considered as promising and affordable alternatives to the current energy storage technology. However, so far they have reached only a relatively short productive time. Jülich researchers from IEK-9 have now discovered why. More in German.

Materials Laboratory Subject to Radiation Protection Ordinance "Only"

Since 1 July, the former Hot Materials Laboratory, which is now operated by IEK-4 as the High-Temperature Materials Laboratory (HML), is no longer subject to the German Atomic Energy Act. Starting immediately, it can now be operated with a licence pursuant to the Ordinance on the Protection against Damage and Injuries Caused by Ionizing Radiation. This step facilitates the usage of the laboratory for non-nuclear research, for example as part of the characterization and qualification of high-temperature. More in German.

Science meets art in an unusual fashion in Düsseldorf: In a 'choeographed dinner' Anja Costa (IEK-7) conveyed the fascination of cloud research. With the help of impressing cloud pictures she illustrated why clouds are very much an unknown quantity in the complex climate events. More in German.

For the competition ‘Fast Forward Science 2016’ science videos can be submitted in three categories: In the category Substance the emphasis is on the depth of content of the video. The category Scitainment stresses the entertainment value of the video. The new category Vision is about research that has the potential to positively change our lives. The first three ranks in each category are € 3,000 (1st rank), € 2,000 (2nd rank) and EUR 1,000 (3rd rank). Deadline for submitting videos is 31 July 2016. Batteries Come up for Air

Promising energy storage systems can now be selectively optimized

At the moment, lithium-ion batteries are state of the art in energy storage. However, competitors are already waiting in the wings, including lithium-air technology. A team from Forschungszentrum Jülich and Technische Universität München recently found an explanation for the fact that these promising batteries so far only survive a few charge cycles. They demonstrated that the operation of lithium-air batteries leads to the formation of a particularly reactive form of oxygen. This discovery will make it possible to selectively improve lithium-air batteries.

Copernicus contributes to the Energiewende

The results of the Copernicus Project Competition were announced today by minister Johanna Wanka, BMBF. One of the four Copernicus projects selected is "Power-To-X" which is coordinated by the RWTH Aachen, Forschungszentrum Jülich and the DECHEMA. This project is concerned with the storage and use of electrical energy from renewable energy sources by converting them into material energy sources and chemical products. It is funded in the first of three planned stages of development with a volume of 30 million euros by the BMBF. A total of 17 research institutes, 26 industrial companies and three civil society organizations involved in the P2X project. In fall of 2015 the BMBF launched the major funding initiative ‘Copernicus projects’, 41 applications were submitted. Target of Copernicus projects is to develop in the next decade technologies that drive the transformation of the energy system in critical areas. More in German.

The future of batteries

Jülich scientists are involved in a new project dealing with battery research. Next generation high-energy batteries are set to be the follow-up of lithium-ion batteries. Currently, several technological apporaches compete. In the project 'BenchBlatt' scientists investigate which apporach is most suitable. Here, competetive ability with respect to stability and storage density as well as costs and material availability is the center point. The research center for battery research MEET at the Westfälische Wilhelms-University in Münster started the projected end of February. More in German.

Ozone Depletion above the Arctic: Increase in UV Value possible

A team of climate researchers, including scientists from Jülich, have found indications that considerable ozone depletion has begun this winter above the Arctic. The reason is the unusually low temperatures in the polar stratosphere. The researchers intend to perform more measurements in the coming weeks as part of the POLSTRACC (Polar Stratosphere in a Changing Climate) campaign to further investigate ozone depletion over the northern polar region. Jülich stratospheric researchers are contributing calculations updated every day. Strong ozone depletion could result in rising UV values until March. A website updated daily (in German) will provide information on whether this could lead to an increased risk of sunburn. More in German.

Electrolyser Project in Operation for 1000 Hours

In the Ekolyser project, researchers from Forschungszentrum Jülich are developing methods for the production of hydrogen by the electrolysis of water together with partners from science and industry. In a new test facility, they are testing more robust and inexpensive materials. The prototype has now completed its envisaged operating time of 1000 hours and the technology should be ready for widespread application by 2020. More in German.

Understanding the Climate better with Gloria

Global climatic processes are complex and many questions are still open. Climatologists from Forschungszentrum Jülich now aim to answer two of them: What processes influence ozone depletion in the lowermost stratosphere? And what effect do the elusive gravity waves have on climate? To solve these issues, Jülich scientists together with colleagues from several German research institutions are heading north from Kiruna in Sweden on board the research aircraft HALO for measurement flights. At altitudes of up to 14 kilometres, the GLORIA detector developed at Jülich will also be put into operation.

Winter Smog in China - Searching for Unknown Radicals

Fine dust and smog do not only result from traffic and industry. The majority of the pollutants are actually formed in the air – by hydroxyl radicals and other as yet unknown substances. Atmospheric chemists from Forschungszentrum Jülich intend to track down these trace substances in the RACE research project. More in German.

HALO Sets Off for the North Pole

Between January and March 2016, the research aircraft HALO will be taking off from Kiruna in Sweden for flights over the polar sea towards Greenland and the North Pole. Climatologists, including researchers from Forschungszentrum Jülich, will be making extensive measurements in the tropopause region at altitudes from about 7 to 17 kilometres. The aim of the POLSTRACC campaign (Polar Stratosphere in a Changing Climate) is to better understand the processes that influence ozone and other climate-relevant trace gases in the Arctic tropopause region in winter

Jülich Researchers Receive Funding from European Research Council

Jun.-Prof. Dr. Samir Lounis from Forschungszentrum Jülich and RWTH Aachen University and Dr. Hendrik Fuchs from Forschungszentrum Jülich are to receive Consolidator Grants from the European Research Council (ERC) in Brussels. This involves funding totalling € 3.85 million over a five-year period. The money is intended to help the physicists extend and consolidate their innovative research.

Jülich Expertise: Plants react differently on the climate change as expected

The more CO2 the more plant growth. This is the simple set phrase most climate models take into account. However, many plants seem to behave differently, namely: The more CO2 the less transpiration, that means less release of water to the atmosphere. So far, the consequences are not clear. Jülich Biologists will investigate this phenomena from beginning of 2016.

The distinctive smell of pine forest or cut grass influences our climate. Organic volatiles, originating from the plants, form larg complexes in the atmosphere that scatter the sunlight or serve as a nucleus for clouds.

Atmospheric Gravitation Waves discovered in new satellite photographs

A team of international scientists involving Jülich scientists succeeded in observing disturbances in the middle and high  earth's atmosphere. Using infrared pictures of two NASA satellites the propagation of these atmospheric gravitation waves from the earth to mesosphere at 90km altitude were invastigated. This observation gives substantial information that helps to improve future climate models.

His pitch will be about "Nanosilicon Synthesis for Energy and Medicine".

Norbert Menzler, IEK-1, coordinator of  the project MeMO (Electrochemical metal-metal oxide high-temperature storage for centralized and decentralized stationary applications) is a guest of the German President Joachim Gauck. According to the assessment of a panel of experts, MeMO is one of the most innovative projects in regard to environmental and sustainability aspects. Upon invitation of Joachim Gauck MeMO is displayed this week in the park of Schloss Bellevue in Berlin during the "Week of the Environment".

Yulia Arinicheva (IEK-6) was chosen from several hundred applicants to participate at the 65th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting (28 June - 3 July 2015). In this meeting she will be given the opportunity to meet Nobel Laureates from the fields of Physics, Chemistry, and Physiology or Medicine, and attend their lectures, panel discussions on interdisciplinary topics, and small-size discussion sessions.

Trevor William Clyne, University of Cambridge, UK, has been honoured with the Helmholtz International Fellow Award 2014. The materials scientist was nominated by Forschungszentrum Jülich. As a fellow he will receive € 20,000 each in prize money and will be invited to take part in research visits to Forschungszentrum Jülich. Since 2012 Prof. Clyne is a member of the HITEC Advisory Board.
