Requirements of universities
The doctoral degrees in HITEC are always awarded by the universities. Within the universities the faculties formally determine the requirements for doctoral studies, govern the order of the doctoral studies process, and lay both down in their own regulations. Most usually, the basic educational requirement for being accepted as a doctoral student is an outstanding degree awarded by an internationally recognised research university or equivalent degree-awarding institution. This degree has to be equivalent to a German Master's degree (or to a "Magister", "Diplom", or "State Examination" degree according to the pre-Bologna degree system).
The university will evaluate international degrees and decide whether they can be considered equivalent to a German university degree. If the degree is not fully recognized, students may be given the opportunity to take selected classes and sit exams related to their field of research in order to gain full admittance to PhD studies at a later stage.
